The 2021 Front Porch Concert Series at Creative Suitland Arts Center

Live outdoor concerts are BACK! Front Porch at Suitland Outdoor Concert Series features a wide array of live music and entertainment for the greater Suitland community and beyond. Experience this concert in person, at a socially safe distance! Masks are required for in-person attendance.

Join us for POETRY NIGHT hosted by Creative Suitland Poetry Coordinator, C. Thomas. Featured poets include Cassandra IsFree, Roscoe Burnems, Carlynn Newhouse & Enoch The Poet.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Douglas Powell, known in the community by his stage name, Roscoe Burnems. Burnems is a published author, award winning spoken-word artist, comedian and teacher, and Richmond, VA's First poet laureate. 

He is also the star of the first poetry and comedy special, Traumedy, streaming now on Amazon Prime and other platforms.

Carlynn Newhouse is a poet, emcee, performer, and educator. She is an Adobe Creativity Scholar attending Howard University, a National YoungArts Finalist, 3-time Youth Speaks Seattle Grand Slam Champion, and ranked 4th in the 2020 Women of the World Poetry Slam. Her work has been featured on platforms such as Button Poetry, The Seattle Globalist, the Kennedy Center, and more. 

Carlynn believes poetry is a form of activism and tool for raising awareness in hopes of making the world a safer space.

Enoch is a poet, author, and teaching artist born and raised on the Northside of Wilmington, DE. His work examines the process of healing and the ways that trauma and mental health move through a family, as well as the outside forces that affect or have affected these developments. His goal is to create written works, curriculum, and platforms that deepen our emotional understanding and its cyclical relation to the conditions acting on the Black mind, body, and spirit. 

Enoch is the 2017 Philadelphia Fuze Grand Slam Champion and the author of two poetry collections, “The Guide to Drowning” released in 2017 and “Burned at the Roots” released in 2020. Enoch operates as the creative director of Urgent 365, Inc, a non-profit working to close the opportunity gap for Black and Brown youth striving for personal and professional growth in Philadelphia, as well as the Executive Publisher and Founder of Black Minds Publishing, LLC, a national publications platform centered around the personal and professional growth of artists and creatives of the Black diaspora.

Cassandra IsFree is an author, performer, and playwright/award-winning actress from Norfolk, VA. A founding member of the Verb Benders Slam Team, Cassandra is also a 4x Write About Now Slam Champion, 2x Word is Write Slam Champion and a 2x Pure Ink Slam Champion. She’s been published in journals both nationally and internationally. Cassandra is a recent recipient of the Editor’s Choice Award for the DiBiase Poetry Contest and was selected as winner of the 2021 Poetry on the Pavement contest for the City of Norfolk, VA, where her poetry will be stenciled onto sidewalks throughout the city
