The Inspiration:
This Sneaker Ball is the opening event of a three-part series celebrating resilience and raising support for an initiative that honors those whose lives have been impacted by cancer, and is rooted in emotional truth expressed through art.
The Silent Art Auction will feature original works inspired by the universal stories that emerge from the cancer journey—transformation, resilience, faith, restoration, and hope. Each piece invites viewers to reflect on the strength of the human spirit while supporting a mission anchored in healing and celebration.
This is where the journey begins—with not just individual stories, but shared human experience.
Art opens the door. Community enters the space.

This evening launches the YOU-logies journey. The commissioned art series and multidisciplinary performances honoring individual cancer survivors and fighters will be unveiled later this fall during the YOU-logies Art Experience in November. Stay tuned for more Information.
As part of the Art That Gives Back Sneaker Ball, we invite every guest to celebrate someone they love by wearing a color that represents the type of cancer that has touched their life.
Whether you are honoring someone currently in treatment, celebrating a survivor, remembering a loved one, or standing in support of a family member or friend, your color becomes a visible expression of love, remembrance, and hope.
If your loved one's cancer does not have a color you know, if they were affected by multiple cancers, or if you simply wish to stand in solidarity with everyone impacted by cancer, we invite you to wear lavender—the universal color representing all cancers and those whose journeys transcend a single diagnosis.
Together, our colors will transform the room into a living tribute—a mosaic of stories, resilience, remembrance, and enduring love.

OPEN MIC RULES
5 MINUTES. As soon as your mouth opens, your 5 minutes have begun.
RESPECT THE SPACE. This is a safe space and will be treated as such. The open mic is church for many of us, and it takes a lot of courage to share while fighting a war of nerves to share parts of our lives with others. We don’t know each other’s struggles, but we respect one another.
WHAT YOU WON’T DO. No homophobia. No transphobia. No disrespect against ANYONE’S sexuality or gender expression. No racism. No xenophobia. No misogyny. Straight to the point, no BS!
WATCH YOUR MOUTH. Yes, cursing is allowed, but only in the context of a piece!
NO BACKTRACKS. Acapella performances only! No exceptions.
BYE, FELICIA! Not following any of these rules will get you kicked out and banned from future open mics, so play nicely. We are all here for a reason. Let’s have fun and let’s enjoy this space and the art we are about to witness.

The Neighborhood Bardom with Javon Rustin
The Neighborhood Bardom with Javon Rustin
Welcome to The Neighborhood Bardom: Mental Health and Wellness Through Writing: Power, Community & the Stories We Carry
The Neighborhood Bardom is a three-part virtual writing workshop series created and led by award-winning slam poet Javon Rustin. Each 90-minute session explores a unique theme through creative prompts, engaging discussion, and dynamic writing exercises designed to spark inspiration and strengthen your craft. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just beginning your creative journey, The Neighborhood Bardom offers a welcoming space to connect, create, and discover new ways to tell your story. Come ready to write, reflect, and build community with fellow creatives from the comfort of home.
What happens when we pause, take inventory of what sustains us, and write from that place?
Join us for a warm and welcoming three-part virtual writing series that explores mental health, wellness, community, and creative expression through storytelling and reflective writing. Facilitated by award-winning slam poet Javon Rustin, this series invites writers to consider how we care for ourselves, invest in one another, and draw strength from the people, values, and resources that help us navigate life's challenges.
In this 90-minute interactive workshop, participants will engage in thoughtful conversation, creative exploration, and guided writing exercises designed to spark both personal insight and artistic growth.
With a new theme each month, this month's session, PowerNomics in Poetry, inspired by Dr. Claud Anderson's PowerNomics, will challenge participants to identify the resources, tangible or intangible, that they carry with them and use those strengths to face our battles. Whether the battle is personal, emotional, social, spiritual, or entirely imagined, you'll leave with new writing, new perspectives, and perhaps a few new tools for the journey.
What to Expect
A safe, supportive and encouraging virtual space
Meaningful conversation around wellness, resilience, and community
Guided writing prompts and creative exercises
New storytelling and writing techniques
Time to reflect, write, and share (sharing is always optional)
Fresh inspiration and a deeper connection to your creative voice
Format: Virtual
Duration: 90 Minutes
Open to: Writers of all levels, from curious beginners to seasoned storytellers
Bring your favorite notebook, a warm drink, and an open mind. Come write with us as we explore the power of story, the strength of community, and the resources we already carry within us.

EFFERVESCENT: House of Swann
EFFERVESCENT is a celebration of love, joy, wellness, and visibility for the LGBTQIA+ community (ages 18+). This event loudly and proudly amplifies the work of queer artists and makers, organizations, and cultural architects.
This year, Creative Suitland’s Effervescent pays tribute to William Dorsey Swann, a pioneer and icon of drag, activism, and dance. The “Queen of Drag” was a formerly enslaved person whose audacity and innovation was the forerunner to ballroom culture in Washington, DC. Among other heroic acts, this trailblazer stood up to the police who arrested the performer for the first documented case of “female impersonation”. Swann is also the first person on record, through a request for a presidential pardon, to pursue legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ community's right to gather.
In honor of Swann, we are throwing a party! Come in your best drag and enjoy music, dance, food, drink, fellowship, art, and joy!
Hosted by Rich Rocket and special guest emcee Rayceen Pendarvis, this is more than an event, it’s a whole experience! Expect nothing but good energy, undeniable vibes, and a space where you can show up boldly, freely, and fully yourself. Pull up, plug in, and live out loud.
Performances by Comedian Grace Wynter and Dance Company Afta Shock.
Mini Ball with two categories: First Time in Drag and Best Dressed Spectator
Dance Party w/ DJ Blasian!
