FEATURED POET
Queen Drissy is a poet, educator, and multidisciplinary creative whose work rises from the roots of family, blossoms in pride for Black womanhood, and carries the rhythms of healing, love, and empowerment. A proud graduate of Howard University with a master’s from Bowie State University, she is also a traveler who finds inspiration in the power of community across cultures and places. A resident of District Heights, she brings that spirit into her Prince George’s County Visual Arts classroom and onto the stage—creating spaces where Black voices and stories can flourish.

  2. RESPECT THE SPACE. This is a safe space and will be treated as such. The open mic is church for many of us, and it takes a lot of courage to share while fighting a war of nerves to share parts of our lives with others. We don’t know each other’s struggles, but we respect one another.

  3. WHAT YOU WON’T DO. No homophobia. No transphobia. No disrespect against ANYONE’S sexuality or gender expression. No racism. No xenophobia. No misogyny. Straight to the point, no BS!

  4. WATCH YOUR MOUTH. Yes, cursing is allowed, but only in the context of a piece!

  5. NO BACKTRACKS. Acapella performances only! No exceptions.

  6. BYE, FELICIA! Not following any of these rules will get you kicked out and banned from future open mics, so play nicely. We are all here for a reason. Let’s have fun and let’s enjoy this space and the art we are about to witness.

A Sensory-Friendly and Family Fun Show

Grammy Award winner Dan Zanes and Haitian-American jazz vocalist Claudia Zanes perform Dan’s greatest hits as well as folk and blues classics from their popular new songbook entitled Dan Zanes’ House Party!: A Family Roots Music Treasury. Concerts also include selections from their Kennedy Center commissioned folk opera, Night Train 57, which premiered in 2017.

During these highly interactive shows, the audience is invited to dance and sing along in what might be called a casual—and subversively educational—party atmosphere.
