African Dance! with Nikki Childress of KSCDE

This class welcomes all levels to participate in moving every part of your body accompanied by djembe and dundun drumming.  You will be introduced to powerful West African dances/rhythms and rich history.  Students will learn of traditional dances combined with new moves from such countries as Ghana, Guinea, Senegal and more.  Classes will include warm-up, a description of the dance being taught and a sequence of movement across the floor.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

 “Nikki”, is a native of Queens, New York, aspired to be a dancer at the age of four.  As one of the youngest members of the Dance Street Company, Nikki’s natural ability and creative talent became very apparent as she excelled at multiple disciplines, including African, Ballet and modern Dance. Being an Army dependent and having to travel with her husband, Nikki has had a chance to dance with and be apart of some great companies which include Alvin Ailey, Afro 1 Dance & Drum Theater, African Heritage, Kankouran West African Dance and Soul in Motion Players.  Nikki is formerly a dance instructor and choreographer of BodyMoves in Fort Washington and SIMPINC’s Artistic Choreographer.

Currently, Mrs. Childress is Resident Traditional Choreographer for Katherine Smith Contemporary Dance Ensemble and a dancer/performer with Coyaba Dance Theater.
