On Stage at Suitland: HUMANS ARE STUPID

  • Creative Suitland 4719 Silver Hill Road Suitland-Silver Hill, MD, 20746 United States (map)

From the makers of “Traumedy: a poetry and comedy special” (currently streaming on Amazon Prime and other platforms), comes a hilarious and thought provoking dissection of the human experience.

Humans Are Stupid: a poetry and comedy special is a powerful mix of spoken-word and comedic material from poet laureate and National Poetry Slam Champion, Douglas Powell/Roscoe Burnems.

The special covers a myriad of topics: race, relationships, fatherhood, education, and other polarizing issues in a way that allows people to laugh and grow. Douglas has found the perfect blend to addressing challenging conversations, adding perspective, and building connections.

Doors open at 7pm and show starts at 8pm on Feburary 26, 2022. (60 Minute Show)

Who are… “they”?

Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Douglas Powell has artistically been known as Roscoe Burnems for decades, originally to distinguish his onstage persona from his real life, but the two lives have since merged and his names have as well. They prefer to be introduced as “Douglas Powell ‘slash’ Roscoe Burnems”, but either/or is fine. In response to what  he prefers to be called, the answer is always “We answer to both.” As an artist Roscoe has accomplished many feats that are a first: He is the first poet laureate of Richmond, Va, the first National Poetry Slam Champion from Virginia, the first poet to have a streaming poetry special, and first poet from Virginia to do a TEDx talk. Douglas had his first regional book tour in 2018 throughout the Southeast where he began blurring the lines of standup comedy and poetry. In 2019 he filmed Traumedy in front of a sold out crowd.  He is a 3x published author and has had dozens of poems published in several literary magazines, journals, and reviews.

Reviews:

“This was brilliant. This was beautiful art. It was too good to fit in one box. This was poetry, comedy, therapy, spoken-word, and a journey.” -Shannon T.

“This is an amazing combination of humor and the realism of life. He shares his truth and makes you want to listen to your own.” - Shelby Madison
